Buddy Walk Info and Agenda This Week

Hey all! It's that time again - time for the 5th Annual Champaign County Down Syndrome Network Buddy Walk!

"The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to bring together a wide range of concerned individuals to reach out to friends, family, and co-workers to promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down syndrome and to raise fund for local and national education, research, and advocacy programs."

So mark your calendars for October 24th, 2009. Saddle up and come on out to join Christopher's Cowpokes for a rootin' tootin' good time at the Champaign County Fairgrounds! Git gussied up in your best cowboy/cowgirl gear, rustle up some grub, and enjoy the entertainment. This year, entertainment includes Leonardo - a children's musical performer, mini golf, bounce houses, carnival games, Dodge "Raminator" monster truck, fire truck, food, and raffle prizes.

This year, it is free to register, but to get a T-shirt, you must register BEFORE September 15. You can still register after. You can also register, even if you can't get out to walk with us. As always, you can donate too.

All of this can be done on-line. Just click on the badge on the side and follow the instructions to register or donate. Our team is called "Christopher's Cowpokes". Following is the schedule for the day:

9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Registration & Carnival Games
10:00a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Live Performances
11:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Welcome Remarks
11:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Line up for Walk Route
12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. Begin Walk
12:45 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. Performance by Leonardo
1:15 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Drawling for Raffle Prizes

Tomorrow we go back to Chicago for speech evals and Augmentative Therapy Evals. We are supposed to have one at Comer first thing in the morning. However, we have received three reminder messages telling us to be in three different places at the same time. I think I am going to call and reschedule this until they decide what they want to do and where. Especially, since the next appointment is in downtown Chicago at 10:30 at Rehab Institute of Chicago. AND because Oprah has shut down half of downtown Chicago right where we need to be. I have no idea what the traffic is going to be like, or how close to Oprah we are going to be. This appointment is more important than the other. We can get a swallow study any time in Peoria, and he will have another speech eval at LaRabida in November.

Below is a pic of Lil Man at LaRabida last week. He was NOT happy. :) Mean Mommy had to put splints on his arms because he kept ripping his mask off. We did get his wheelchair adjusted properly and OT and PT were able to actually lay eyes on him before their appointments for evals. Great for us because I think it moved him up a little on the waiting list. They will be doing a round table eval at the first of November.

I think this is it for now. Don't forget to register and/or donate for the Buddy Walk. We hope to see everybody out there! Our goal is not very high this year - let's see if we can meet or beat it. Thanks!

Steph

Does he always have Oxygen? And remind me what the mask is for. For some reason your blog is not updating on mine.

No - he usually just uses the O2 while he is sleeping. Sometimes, after those long car rides, he is sleepy when we get there and he just dozes until something catches his attention (he is sooooo nosy! LOL!), so we will put the O2 on him

The mask is because he doesn't really have an immune system. The two hospitals we take him to in Chicago are the ones who have treated the most cases of swine flu in Illinois - most deaths as well. Taking no chances. :)

P.S. Blogger has been doing weird stuff lately - it's not just you. :)

Stephanie,

I just love Buddy Walk season! I hope you have a great time--we always have fun with all the activities at our BW.

Hope the appts work out okay next week--what a challenge. I heard that Oprah was closing some roads. Sounds like a real hassle. Hope it all goes well.
